Which is Better, Wigs or Hair extensions?

Wigs and hair extensions have become popular ways to switch up hairstyles or remedy hair issues such as hair loss and damage. But, determining which is best for you, is based on individual circumstances and preferences.

Ultimately, both are effective solutions for a number of problems and both come with their own set of pros and cons.

So, to help you come to a decision, we’ve explained all there is to know about hair extensions and wigs for different purposes.

Like hats, wigs are easily removable head covering that is covered in hair. Depending on the wig, this hair can be human hair, animal hair or synthetic fibre. The hair is fitted to a cap, which is glued onto the head.

Pros of wigs

Wigs are a popular choice of hairstyle for a number of reasons, including:

  • Wigs are a quick and easy way to switch up a hairstyle. Available in a variety of lengths, colours, styles and patterns, wearers can change their wig daily to match outfits and occasions as necessary.
  • Wigs can protect your natural hair as there is no need to cut, colour or style it with heat.
  • A wig that is being looked after well can last longer which translates to lower maintenance costs.
  • Wigs are a great remedy for balding and hair loss, whether it be health related or due to genetics. As wigs do not need to be attached to natural hair, they can be worn by almost anyone.
  • If there is natural hair underneath the wig, wearing one gives it time to rest and recover from any damage. This means that in time, natural hair can become healthier and you will not need to wear a wig forever, if you do not wish to.

Cons of wearing a wig

Despite these benefits, there are some downsides of wearing a wig. These include:

  • A wig should not be slept in, which means you will have to remove it and reapply it daily. This can become time consuming for some, but it could be looked at as the same as brushing and styling natural hair everyday.
  • Wigs are not secured onto the head so a wearer must be careful and wary of it slipping and falling. Although, with the right glue and application method, wigs are perfectly suitable for normal everyday use.
  • As many of us are not used to the feel of a wig cap on our head all day, wigs can be uncomfortable or difficult to adjust to.

Wigs are recommended for hair loss, thin or damaged hair as they do not add any weight or pressure on what could already be fragile strands.

In order to get the best results from your wig, maintenance and care is vital. It is recommended that you do not sleep or shower in a wig as this could tangle and damage the hair. Once taken off however, the hair should be washed and treated to increase its longevity.

Hair extensions

Hair extensions are fundamentally individual wefts of hair that can be incorporated into your natural locks. Included in the category of hair extensions are weaves. While hair extensions are clipped, glued or sewn onto the hair, weaves are sewn down into braids formed by the natural hair.

There are a number of application methods for hair extensions and weaves, some of which include:

  • LA weave
  • Invisible weave
  • Braided sew-in hair extensions
  • Tape hair extensions
  • Fusion bond hair extensions
  • Micro ring hair extensions
  • Nano ring hair extensions

Hair extension pros

There are a number of reasons for why people opt for hair extensions, including:

  • Hair extensions, and weaves in particular, offer long-lasting results. Extensions that have been glued or sewn in can last a number of months if looked after properly.
  • Extensions are the ideal way to create your preferred length and volume without having to spend months, or even years, caring for and growing your hair. As everyone’s natural hair and preferences are different, hair extensions can be tailored whereby you choose the amount of wefts to install.
  • As extensions are incorporated into your natural hair, the finished result looks, feels and moves much more authentically.
  • Due to the methods of application, weaves and hair extensions are much more secure so can withstand almost all situations and environments.

Cons of hair extensions

Hair extensions are not suitable for everybody. Here’s why:

  • Hair extensions should not be installed into thinning or breaking hair as the added weight can make matters worse. Similarly, where there is hair loss, it is virtually impossible for extensions to be fitted as it needs to be attached to some natural hair.
  • Getting extensions installed can be time consuming and expensive. Depending on what installation method you go for and the volume of your hair, it can take several hours to have extensions fitted. The cost and time required for aftercare appointments should be taken into consideration too.

For anyone with normal and healthy hair, extensions are a great option, particularly if you want to maintain a style for a longer period of time. Although, the same results can be achieved with clip in extensions, which can be removed daily with ease.

It is recommended that you consult with a specialist to ensure the hair you choose is the perfect match and blends seamlessly with your natural locks.

The fitting should also be done professionally for the hair to be long-lasting and to avoid any visible tapes, rings or glue, which could dramatically spoil the look and feel of the finished hairstyle.
